By June 2021 alone, four to five months of distance learning had accumulated in schools. Among other things, reading skills in fourth grades fell compared to 2016. According to the researchers, the pandemic is not the only reason for this. There are also indications of a lower level for other subject-specific services, but more reliable data is needed.
The report also shows striking changes for the transition phases in the education system. Last year, seven percent fewer young people started vocational training than in 2019. Similarly, the number of university degrees from 2019 to 2020 fell by six percent.
The research team observed a decline in the range of training and further education that is comparable to the consequences of the 2008 financial crisis. At the same time, pedagogical staff took part in further training courses with an above-average frequency: with a rate of 33 percent, it was almost twice as many as the overall average of all employees (17 percent).
