Higher grants for more trainees: the government wants to reform student loans

While more and more young people are studying, the number of those who benefit from the so-called Federal Training Assistance Act (Bafög) is falling. Therefore, the regulations for this are now to be reformed. It will be voted on in the Bundestag this Thursday. Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) had already presented a corresponding draft law in May.

After criticism of it, the traffic light coalition now wants to improve it again and submit an amendment. If the majority of MPs vote for it, students can already benefit from it in the coming winter semester.

How many Bafög recipients are there in central Germany?
In 2020, a total of 69,422 students or trainees received student loans in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. In 2012 there were still 92,793. (25 percent less)

This The Bafög reform should bring improvements

More money:
In the future, instead of the previous 861 euros per month, there will be up to 931 euros in student loans. If the amendment is approved, it could be up to five euros more.

The increase results on the one hand from the fact that the requirement rates are to be raised due to the increased cost of living and on the other hand the childcare and housing allowances are to increase. For those who do not have family insurance, there should be additional benefits in the nursing care and health insurance.

longer money:
In the future, the age limit up to which Bafög can be applied for will be 45 years. So far, 30 years has ended.

Higher asset allowance:
Anyone who saved early or worked part-time while studying was previously punished. That should change now. The asset allowance is to increase from EUR 8,200 to EUR 45,000. The amendment agreement provides for an age scale: According to this, the previous rate for trainees who have not yet reached the age of 30 should be 15,000 euros and from the 30th birthday then 45,000 euros.

The allowance on one’s own income is to be increased by 20 percent: the higher earnings limit for mini jobs of EUR 520 per month, which will come into effect in October 2022, will not be counted in future. Proposed in the amendment: 20.75 percent.

Higher allowances on parental income:
The allowances for the income of the parents of applicants are also to be increased – by at least 20 percent. This means that in the future, 2,400 euros will remain exempt from deductions for married parents. (or 2,415 euros according to the amendment), with a single parent it would be 1,596 euros (or 1,600 euros according to the amendment).

Modern administration:
Applications should now also be able to be submitted by e-mail or digitally.
