Dead 15-year-olds in Salzgitter
Youth suspects remain silent

After officials find a lifeless body in Salzgitter, the investigation begins. According to the autopsy, the 15-year-old suffocated. Two local teenagers quickly become suspects. But so far they have remained silent.

In the case of the 15-year-old who was killed in Salzgitter, the young suspects are silent. “The two alleged perpetrators did not provide any information,” said Hans Christian Wolters from the Braunschweig public prosecutor’s office. According to Wolters, the investigation into the fact in the Lower Saxony city will take some time. Officials discovered the 15-year-old’s body on Tuesday in a park in Salzgitter-Fredenberg.

According to the results of the autopsy on Wednesday afternoon, the girl suffocated, Wolters said. He cited lack of oxygen as the cause of death. A 14-year-old suspect is now in custody on suspicion of murder. In addition to him, a 13-year-old boy is considered an urgent suspect. He could not be prosecuted for the act because he was not yet of criminal age. The role of the 13-year-old in the crime will be further investigated, but only indirectly in the course of the investigation of the 14-year-old suspect.

Youth Welfare Office decides about 13-year-olds

With regard to the younger suspect, everything else is a matter for the youth welfare office. That must now decide to what extent further measures are necessary for him, said the spokesman for the prosecutor. Accommodation in a closed facility would be an option. “Compulsory placement is only permitted by a family court decision,” Dirk Haerdrich, head of the youth department in Salzgitter, emphasized on Wednesday.

Perpetrators and victims came from the same neighborhood and had contact with each other, said Wolters. More details on the relationship between the victims and alleged perpetrators have yet to be determined. The public prosecutor’s office assumes murder and sees base motives. According to initial findings, the crime was insidious because the victim’s suspicion and defenselessness was exploited. “It didn’t happen spontaneously,” Wolters said.
