Italian authorities have allowed the crew of the “Sea-Eye 4” to dock in the port of Messina. This allows more than 470 rescued people ashore. Some of them were on the Mediterranean for more than a week.

The German aid organization “Sea-Eye” is allowed to bring more than 470 boat migrants rescued in the Mediterranean to Sicily. The Italian authorities have assigned the port of Messina to the ship “Sea-Eye 4” – this was confirmed by an organization spokeswoman for the dpa news agency.

The volunteers had rescued the people in several operations. In the meantime, the Italian Coast Guard evacuated some of them because of their poor health. Some have been at sea for more than a week.

More than 300 other people are waiting on the “Sea-Watch 4”

At the same time, the crew of another German ship is still waiting for a safe port. There are about 310 people on board the “Sea-Watch 4”, as “Sea-Watch” wrote on Twitter. On Wednesday night, the authorities evacuated a person because of life-threatening health problems.

The migrants mostly set off from North Africa by boat towards the EU. Again and again overcrowded and unsuitable boats get into distress. In Italy, the main country of arrival, the issue of boat migrants is politically controversial. Right-wing politicians accuse the private organizations of cooperating with the smugglers. The organizations, on the other hand, complain that they have to wait a long time for a safe haven in order to be able to bring people ashore.
